Why is Test and Tag important?

Test and Tag is important for businesses, as the integrity of the businesses electrical appliances ensure that there is no workplace risk to employees, visitors and clients. When testing and tagging is undertaken, a record is created that shows the pass/fail of all electrical equipment tested in the business. Test and Tag is also necessary to maintain insurance premiums and to ensure that businesses are covered properly by insurance policies.

Who can perform Test and Tag?

The Australian Standards state that appliances located within a hostile environment must be tested and tagged by a certified person. Only competent, trained operators should be performing test and tag to appliances and authorise its use. Each member of the Surge Test & Tag team is trained and licensed. Qualified technicians will do two things. First a visual inspection to make sure there’s no obvious damage and then test the applications using a Portable Appliance Tester. Once they have completed an electrical test, our operators put a label to the lead showing the period of validity left before another test is required. A record of all tests done is to be kept as part of our documentation and is provided to our clients to keep on file.

What equipment requires test and tag?

All electrical portable appliances within your workplace and up to 2.5m from the ground must be inspected regularly.  In general, the following items are an example of required appliances for testing and tagging – laptops, desktop computers and monitors, chargers, printers, fax machines, power boards, extension cords, three phase equipment, RCD’s, kitchen appliances etc.

What service do Surge Test & Tag offer?

Portable Appliance Testing

A Portable Appliance Test is a routine inspection of electrical appliances and equipment to check if they are safe to use. Its purpose is to prevent accidents in the workplace from faulty equipment, wiring and other damage to the equipment’s electrical components. A full test is conducted by using a Portable Equipment Tester. The test includes earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance checks.

Microwave Testing

Microwaves are one of the most used kitchen appliances. Whether is at home or at your office you need to ensure its safety. Microwaves require two types of testing. The Surge Test & Tag technicians complete a Radiation Leakage Inspection on your Microwave on site in accordance with Standard AS/NZS 60335.2.9:2020 as well as a Portable Appliance Test.

We use a specialist meter to record any microwave leakage. If any leakage is detected, it is important that the microwave is disposed off, as major harm can be done from radiation exposure.

Emergency and Exit Lights

All exit and emergency lights have a battery which is required to provide light for minimum of 90 minutes in case of a power outage. All emergency and exit lights should be inspected at least once every 6 months.

RCD Safety Switch Testing

RCD stands for Residual Current Device. Its main role is to prevent electrical shocks from happening.  Safety switches are very important for both workplace and home when relating to electrical safety. RCD testing needs to be conducted every 6 months.
